Telling us where you are in Lee

Lee straddles Lewisham and Greenwich, so give us the street. People here say they are at the Lee Green crossroads by the Old Tiger's Head, at Lee station, on Lee High Road (the A20), or by Manor House Gardens, where the old manor house is now the library. The road plus a landmark is all it takes to fix the price first.

What the homes are like, and what that means for the lock

Lewisham Council says the Lee Manor conservation area was built from the 1860s on Baring family land: mainly two storey, pale stock brick houses and terraces, often behind well planted gardens. Its appraisal finds sash windows and panelled wooden front doors surviving on Brightfield Road, and grander villas on Burnt Ash Road and Micheldever Road. Most are family homes; some are converted to multiple occupancy. Many sashes have gone to uPVC, most of all on Taunton Road. Just outside are 1960s flats and newer homes north of the station.

Original timber doors often have a nightlatch and mortice lock that can be repaired, not replaced. Converted houses tend to have a shared front door and a lock on each flat. uPVC handles and gearboxes wear out.

Replacing a door in Lee Manor

Lee Manor conservation area was designated in 1975 and has an Article 4 direction. Under it, changes to doors and windows visible from a public viewpoint need planning permission for a house used as a single home; flats and subdivided houses in conservation areas need permission anyway. A new lock is not a new door. Unsure about your street, or on the Greenwich side? Check with the council before you order a new door.

Common jobs

  • Panelled timber doors on the Lee Manor streets, with worn nightlatches and mortice locks.
  • Lock changes between tenants in converted houses.
  • uPVC windows and doors with handles that will not lock.
  • Flat doors in the 1960s blocks and the newer homes by the station.

Questions people ask

I live in Lee Manor. Can I swap my old front door? Ask the council first. We repair and change the lock, and say if the door itself needs work.

Is Lee in Lewisham or Greenwich? Both, and the SE12 postcode reaches into Bromley as well. The road name is the useful part.
