Telling us where you are in Greenwich
Greenwich is full of landmarks. Say you are by the Cutty Sark, preserved in a dry dock by the river, at the Old Royal Naval College, by the covered Greenwich Market, or at the gates of Greenwich Park, a Royal Park of 183 acres laid out in the 17th century. Greenwich station sits at the northern point of the Ashburnham Triangle. Further north east, the Greenwich Peninsula and The O2 are a different set of streets altogether, so tell us which side you are on.
What the homes are like, and what that means for the lock
Around the market, Georgian and Victorian buildings dominate the town centre, and Greenwich has a well preserved stock of Georgian and Victorian housing. Crooms Hill is described as the oldest continually named street in London. The Peninsula, by contrast, is a major regeneration area of newer blocks.
Period houses can keep a timber front door with a nightlatch and a mortice lock, which can usually be opened and repaired without damage. Where a house has been split into flats there is a shared street door. In newer blocks, flat entrance doors are usually fire doors, so the lock has to be replaced like for like.
Planning rules on front doors
Greenwich contains the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich. The council lists West Greenwich and East Greenwich as conservation areas with two Article 4 directions each, and the Ashburnham Triangle as a conservation area with one. A listing, conservation area or Article 4 direction can change what you may do to a front door, so check with the council before you order a new one. Changing a lock is a different matter.
Common jobs
- Period flats with a shared street door, locked out or after a lost key.
- Lock changes after a move or between tenants.
- uPVC doors and windows with handles that will not lock.
- Burglary repairs to frames and locks. Changing locks after a burglary explains what to do in the first hours.
Questions people ask
I live in a listed house. Can you still change the lock? Yes. A lock is not the door. Ask the council before you change the door itself.
I am on the Peninsula, not in the old town. Same price? Yes. The same price list applies on the Peninsula and in the old town.
