Yes. The locking mechanism in a uPVC door can be replaced without changing the door, and often only the centre gearbox needs swapping. If the hooks, rollers or strip are damaged, the whole multipoint lock is replaced with one that fits the same measurements.
The gearbox is the case in the middle of the door that the handle and key operate. When that is the only part that has failed, it can be taken out and a new one fitted to the existing strip. The Master Locksmiths Association's guide says a gearbox is cheaper to replace than to repair. Where a hook, roller or mushroom along the edge is damaged, it says the complete multipoint lock is replaced.
Parts are not universal. One locksmith guide notes that gearboxes are not universally interchangeable, and a lock supplier's measuring guide warns against ordering from the brand or backset alone. The backset, the centres from handle to keyhole, the faceplate and the position of every locking point must all be checked against the old lock. The make is often stamped on the faceplate or gearbox, and a photo of that stamp helps identify the part.
Older and discontinued locks are the harder jobs. The MLA guide says finding a suitable alternative is the most complicated part, although alternatives from the leading brands cover most situations. ERA, which makes replacement multipoint locks, notes in its fitting instructions that a new gearbox may not fit the old slot first time, and that some uPVC or timber may need cutting away.
If the cylinder comes out during the job, it is a good moment to check it. Police cylinder advice names two standards, TS 007 and Sold Secure Diamond (SS312), says a 3 star solution is the minimum, and says a cylinder should not be left sticking out from the door or handle. A new gearbox makes the lock work again, but it does not change how secure the cylinder is.
Replacing a uPVC gearbox or multipoint mechanism costs £110 on weekdays from 8am to 6pm, £140 on evenings and weekends, and £150 from 10pm to 8am, plus the part. A uPVC centre gearbox part is £50, so a weekday daytime gearbox job comes to £160, including travel and up to one hour on site. The part is named and priced before we set off.
