The Master Locksmiths Association lists the lock alone from about £27 for a basic euro cylinder, £64 for an anti snap cylinder, £38 for a BS3621 mortice deadlock and £100 for a BS3621 nightlatch. Fitted, its UK figures start at £105 for a standard cylinder and £148 for a mortice lock, including VAT.
Which lock you need depends on the door. The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) notes that euro cylinders are commonly used on uPVC doors and nightlatches on wooden doors, and a wooden door may have a mortice lock as well. Its prices for the lock alone are starting figures that leave out labour, fitting and any call out charge, and they may be subject to VAT.
The security standard moves the price. A basic euro cylinder is the cheapest, but the MLA warns it is not tested against snapping, and it says cylinders rated TS007 3 star or Sold Secure Diamond usually cost more. For mortice locks, a BS3621 5 lever deadlock starts from about £38, against £28 for one that is not British Standard. Some insurers insist on BS3621.
On a uPVC or composite door, changing the lock usually means changing the cylinder, the part the key goes into. If the multipoint mechanism inside the door has failed, that is a bigger job: the MLA lists a full multipoint lock strip at £76 to £263 or more, before labour. Brand and size move every one of these prices, so treat them as starting points.
Fitted prices depend on who supplies the lock and when the work is done, so ask whether a quote includes the part. We name and price parts before we set off: a standard euro cylinder is £25, a TS007 3 star anti snap cylinder £60, a uPVC centre gearbox £50 and a BS3621 5 lever mortice lock £70, plus the price of the job.
