Telling us where you are in Camberwell
Say you are on Camberwell Green, once a traditional village green and now a small area of common land, at King's College Hospital, one of London's largest teaching hospitals, by the Maudsley Hospital, or at Camberwell College of Arts. Denmark Hill and Loughborough Junction stations serve the area. A landmark plus the road is enough to price the job and plan the way in.
What the homes are like, and what that means for the lock
Camberwell mixes Georgian and 20th century housing, including several tower blocks. Southwark Council says Camberwell Grove and Grove Lane were built from the 1770s to the 1840s, with homes from late Georgian to Edwardian. Around the Green, the main streets have mostly commercial frontages in three and four storey blocks, and Peabody tenements stand on the Green's eastern side.
Georgian and Victorian houses often keep a timber door with a mortice lock and a nightlatch, and where a house has been divided there is a shared street door and a lock on each flat. In the tower blocks and newer buildings, flat entrance doors are usually fire doors, so a lock is replaced like for like.
Planning rules on front doors
Southwark lists Camberwell Grove, Camberwell Green and Addington Square among its conservation areas, and says an Article 4 direction covers several of its conservation areas. If you live in one, check with the council before you order a new front door. Changing a lock is a different matter.
Common jobs
- Flats above the shops near the Green, locked out or after a lost key.
- Lock changes between tenants in divided houses.
- Fire doors to flats in the blocks, with a like for like lock.
- Burglary repairs. If keys went with the burglar, read changing locks after a burglary first.
