Telling us where you are in Beckenham
Beckenham is centred on its curving high street, which is not pedestrianised. Say you are at Beckenham Junction station, where the tram also stops, by St George's, the parish church in the centre of the town, by the Grade II listed war memorial or the Odeon cinema, or in Kelsey Park. Beckenham Place Park and Cator Park are larger open spaces. Away from the centre, shops run along Bromley Road, Croydon Road, and Beckenham Road around Clock House station, and the town has several other stations too: Clock House, New Beckenham, Ravensbourne, Beckenham Hill and Kent House. Say which one is nearest. Give one of those and the road name, and the price comes back before anyone sets off.
What the homes are like, and what that means for the lock
Beckenham was a small village until the railway came in 1857. Between 1850 and 1900 its population grew from 2,000 to 26,000 as the Cator family leased and sold land for villas. Large villas began to be built around the new station, many by developers who bought land from the Cator family, and wide roads and large gardens set the character of those streets. Building carried on at a slower pace after 1900.
Big older houses often have a solid timber front door with a mortice lock and a nightlatch, and sometimes a side or back door that is easy to forget. Later houses may have uPVC or composite doors, where a worn gearbox stops the handle lifting or lets the key turn freely. uPVC door lock problems explains the test.
Common jobs
- Period front doors with worn nightlatches and mortice locks.
- Lockouts opened without damage where possible.
- Replacement uPVC and composite front doors where the gearbox has failed and the handle will not lift.
- Burglary repairs and lock changes. See changing locks after a burglary.
